Los Robles Health System's Graduate Medical Education Program is taking patient care to the next level with the introduction of new state-of-the-art virtual reality simulations.

Utilizing a cutting-edge software platform, residents and fellows will be transported to realistic virtual clinical environments to train in patient care.

"It's incredibly lifelike and immersive," stated Los Robles Health System Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Gabriella Sherman. "A physician's bedside manner is essential in any hospital setting, and I strongly believe that our residents and fellows are going to benefit from these simulations that will help sharpen their communication skills and reinforce their clinical knowledge as they diagnose and treat patients."

Los Robles Health System currently has first year and second year residents participating in these simulations across the following specialties: internal medicine, emergency medicine, anesthesiology, general surgery and neurology. The program is also utilized by transitional year residents that are doing their first-year rotations at Los Robles before they move onto a more specific specialty.

Once a student completes the simulation, they are given a base score and feedback to help enhance their care experience. The simulation is not meant to replace real-time clinical rotations but rather is a resource for residents and fellows to practice and to refine their skillsets.

"These simulations have helped me pause and reflect on my day-to-day interactions," stated Internal Medicine Resident Physician Trevor Wolchover. "I want to ensure my patients are having a positive experience, no matter the circumstance. These simulations provide a safe environment, where I can put my skillset to the test and identify opportunities for growth. My patients deserve the best, and I am grateful for the perspective that these tools afford me," stated Dr. Wolchover.

These innovative platforms are redefining the way students can obtain meaningful feedback. Once they complete their simulation, they are able to work with Graduate Medical Education staff and attending physicians to elevate their interactions with patients, families and colleagues.

Virtual reality simulations provide a safe space for residents and fellows to sharpen their skills while enhancing their commitment to quality care. The new technology is a testament to HCA Healthcare's commitment to innovation and one of the many reasons it was named on Fortune’s 2026 World’s Most Admired Companies™ list for the 12th consecutive year.
